Well, I've had everything fail on me over the last 9 years - in this case it's the UPS battery which has/is in the process of being eaten by entropy.

The effect is lots of very annoying beeping, with occasional server turn offs. Only happened yesterday afternoon (I think/hope). And it will hopefully get replaced in the next 3 days.

If you notice the server is down, then this is the likely reason.
