you must have a powered factory and combat mass (the amount varies by ship class, Maulers take 6 and each size below that takes 1 less). You then left click on one of your damaged systems and the astrix should become a check (one of the factories will also tell you it's active if you hover your cursor over it).
You don't get any information about mass use though.

You can also jump to the galactic.

Damaged vessels only move every 6 hours on the galactic. They get 1 unit of repair per galactic turn.

However, jumping into an empty (no vessels) system will fully repair the ship.

So, you can stay in system, repairing yourself by rapidly submitting turns. You can jump to galactic and repair 1 unit per 6 hours.

You can jump to galactic and then jump into an empty system on the next galactic turn.

Another handy strategy is to place some specialist repair vessels in a safe system, jumping damaged vessels into it to be repaired.

I have a question about the repair drone... what exactly does it do? and is it possible to use it to repair a ship's habitat's? (if it can be repaired normally anyway) or does it only repair a single non-habitat unit per 4 mass?

repairs a non-habitat unit per X mass (X is determined by the size class of the ship).

what is up with the multiple of 4 restriction then? does this mean that to repair a battleship, you would have to send 8 mass, but only 5 would get used to repair a single unit? and bringing it to 12 would repair 2...?

I'm confused...

The rules are correct. 4=1 repaired, 8=2 and so on.
The game client has a bug in, it was coded in an age when everything was 5 to repair, so some comments are out of date in the game client.

It's on the list of things that need to be fixed.

wait, so I can repair a battleship with less mass in a repair drone than onboard?

if true it makes "repair ships" much cooler- I just didn't realize it had been made so.

This option seems to be outdated now, correct? Firstly, a safe system would be without enemy, so they would repair automatically. Or does it have to be a system with no ships (including your own) for that to work?

Second, a system with a couple of repair ships in it will probably not let your ship in to be repaired. I can't get some ships into an empty system, let alone one with other vessels already there.
