This is going to be rambling and possibly strange. Depending on what happens with the discussion, I might throw out a suggestion that falls firmly in the “later, if ever” category. That said;

What is Darklight?
The rules describe it as energy which collects within the “heart” that forms within the ships that travel through Ripspace. However, it is a concept which rings throughout sci-fi stories; the ability to go above and beyond. In star-trek it was the training and morale of star fleet, in star-wars it was the force, in others it is blind, dumb, luck... But always, it’s the mind over matter power of those worth noting.
Obviously, from the short bits that I’ve written and posted, I’ve got a clear opinion on how this measure manifests on my ships... It’s a very star-trek sense of training and morale. Sometimes when I see the darklight movement in battle I hear Scotty shouting “I jus’ can’t give ‘er anymore captain!” Each time I put darklight into a drone I see Jordy and Data halfway into a photon torpedo, trying desperately to get it to do whatever cockamamie thing is needed now. Obviously, this is an explicitly “non-cannon” way of viewing the situation... a trait which I made explicitly ironic by deriding superstitious rubes who believe otherwise...
So, how do you view darklight?

I'd say DarkLight is more like ominous potential. A sphere like ball of shimmering null matter which reflects and accentuates the traits of the race on the ship. So, a highly scientific and non superstitious race would indeed view it as tech based, which warriors might see it as some totem of war, feeding it the bones of the enemies and so on. For many it will be a god of sorts, granting boons at the height of battle.

The key thing is that it is potential. To be used as players choose. And better yet, to be fed into story lines as authors desire!
